INFRARED SPECTRA OF STRAINS OF STAPHYLOCOCCUS,

Abstract

The IR absorption spectra of intact cells of 28 strains of white and golden staphylococci differing in biological activity were studied to determine the possibility of using IR spectroscopy for interspecific differentiation of the staphylococci. The various strains were grown on beef-peptone agar, beef-peptone broth, and on cellophane plates. Five absorption bands in the 1650, 1540, 1390, 1235, 1075 cm minus (superscript 1) regions were obtained. There were no differences in the IR spectra of the various staphyloccus strains from cultures on the same nutrient medium. There were stable specific differences in the IR spectra of these staphyloccus strains in the different nutrients. It is suggested that the stability of these differences may be utilized in IR spectroscopic investigation of the dependence of the staphyloccus biological characteristics from a quantitative correlation of chemical groups revealed in its cells by the IR spectra. An interdependence between the quantitative indexes of the chemical groupings in the composition of the microbe cells and certain biological characteristics of the staphylococcus is presumed to exist.
