DISSIPATIVE INSTABILITIES OF AN MHD SHEET FLOW.

Abstract

The stability of a sheet of flowing, non-ideal plasma is examined within linearized MHD. A general equation is obtained for the velocity perturbation of an assumed, non-static equilibrium. With all the equilibrium quantities constant, this equation gives the usual dissipative instabilities. A constant equilibrium flow velocity does not change the situation. Preliminary results obtained with variable (in space) equilibrium quantities are briefly discussed. They seem to indicate that a velocity profile across the sheet affects its stability in a new way.
