STATUS OF AIR-TO-AIR GUIDED MISSILES,

Abstract

The paper introduces some modern air-to-air guided missiles and divides them into three categories: those equipped with fully automatic guidance control system, those equipped with semi-automatic guidance control system, and those equipped with heat-seeking guidance system. Examples are given under each category. In addition, there are also those adopting a combination of radar and infrared guidance system, and those guided with radar. The paper then outlines the general characteristics of air-to-air missiles with regard to their explosives, motive power, sizes, controlling systems, and launching systems; and the general trend of their development, including improving their ability to hit more targets, increasing their range, improving their control systems, and increasing their explosion power. Finally, the paper explains the general shortcomings of this type of missiles. Twelve technical drawings on different air-to-air missiles and three photos are provided. (Author)
