RESEARCH ON ALKOXYSILANES,

Abstract

Physical properties (refraction index, volume and viscosity) change in time and water concentration of tetraethoxysilane aqueous dioxane and alcoholic solutions in the presence of an acid catalyst (HC) were studied. Maximums on property-time isotherms as well as the water concentration changes indicate that the process of tetraethoxysilane hydrolysis is a complicated one. It consists of a series of successive and simultaneous hydrolysis and condensation reactions (intermolecular dehydration and silanolysis) and cannot be presented throughout its duration as a single stoichiometric equation. The appearance of maximums on the property-time isotherms corresponds to the minimum current concentration of water. The effect of Si(OC2H5)4/H2O ratio, catalyst and temperature on the process of hydrolysis has been established. A possible scheme of hydrolysis reaction mechanism has been suggested. (Author)
