OCEAN DATA STATION ALPHA SENSOR SYSTEM DESCRIPTION NORTH PACIFIC STUDY CONFIGURATION,
Abstract
The primary scientific function of Buoy ALPHA during the North Pacific Study is to gather meteorological and oceanographic data. The meteorological data requirements for this experiment are wind velocity and air temperature at 5, 10, and 15 meters above sea level, absolute moisture content, rainfall, radiation, and barometric pressure. Oceanographic data requirements include surface roughness, current velocity, seawater temperature, and air/sea interface temperatures. Underwater measurements of temperature, depth, and conductivity are made at ten positions along the mooring line to a depth of 500 meters. Engineering data requirements comprise the remainder of the buoy's sensor complement. The engineering measurements provide information which is used to establish hull integrity and proper operation of maritime safety equipment. Engineering data are also needed to monitor performance of the Energy Conversion System, Data Acquisition and Control System, and Telemetry and Command Systems. (Author)
