SPEECH COMMUNICATION RESEARCH.
Abstract
The report summarizes research on speech generation, speech analysis, and speech perception. The work on speech analysis and production includes study of airflow measurements during speech production, cineradiographic observations of the speech mechanism, acoustic analysis of constant and vowel sounds in various contexts, and acoustic studies of the utterances of children at various stages in language development. Research on speech perception included experiments on the identification and discrimination of vowels, analysis of consonant confusions in short-term memory, the perception of dichotically alternated clicks, visual perception of speech stimuli, and perception of certain consonant-vowel utterances by children. Activities also involved the development of a flexible facility for speech research, consisting of a medium-sized general-purpose digital computer and a number of peripheral components. (Author)
