REFLECTION, REFRACTION AND COUPLING OF MHD WAVES AT A DENSITY STEP,

Abstract

The transmission and reflection coefficients for MHD waves incident on a density step are calculated. All three modes (fast, slow and Alfven) are coupled together except when the magnetic field is in the plane of incidence or the plane of the interface. Results for arbitrary orientations of interface normal, magnetic field and incident wave vector are shown in a series of graphs. Strong coupling between modes occurs for incident wave vectors nearly parallel the magnetic field. (Author)
