A CROSS CULTURAL STUDY OF NORMATIVE BEHAVIOR AMONG JAPANESE AND AMERICAN YOUTH.

Abstract

The report describes a survey undertaken in three Japanese prefectures of the attitudes of 3,600 Japanese boys and girls between the ages of eleven and eighteen. The respondents in this survey were selected by stratified sampling procedures and are considered to be adequately representative of Japanese youths in this age range. The fixed-schedule interview was adopted from one used with American teenagers by the Survey Research Center of the University of Michigan between 1954 and 1959. Among the topics covered in the interviews were attitudes toward parents, friends, social groups, the self, and the future. Separate reports have been prepared for the male and female respondents. A final integration of the findings and comparison with those obtained with American teenagers is in preparation. (Author)
