COMPRESSION OF POLYTROPIC GASES BY IMPULSIVE PISTON MOTION IN HYPERVELOCITY GUNS, GUN TUNNELS, AND REACTION HEATERS,

Abstract

Simple analytic solutions are obtained for the shock compression of polytropic gases in hypervelocity guns, gun tunnels, and reaction heaters, where the piston is given some finite energy impulsively and is constrained to move with a piecewise uniform velocity. Examples are given to show the variation of pressure, density, and temperature with the specific heat ratio of the gas and with the piston-to-gas mass ratio. (Author)
