DIELECTRIC ROD-FILLED METALLIC WAVEGUIDES OF GENERAL CROSS SECTION.

Abstract

The problem of dielectric rod-filled metallic waveguides of general cross section has not been attempted. Only the special case of a circular cross section has been investigated and analyzed extensively and theoretically. The equations for this special case of a cylindrical waveguide filled coaxially with a dielectric rod were developed for the TM, TE, and hybrid modes. These equations were verified with results found in the literature to excellent agreement. The presence of new higher order modes are found in all cases considered. The point-matching method was applied to the dielectric rod-filled metallic waveguide of general cross section. Equations which match the boundary conditions were developed and programmed for a UNIVAC 1108 Digital Computer. A singularity exists when the point-matching equations are applied to the special case of the dielectric rod loaded coaxially in cylindrical waveguides. Attempts to obtain solutions near this singular point were unsuccessful because of a region of unreliable and unstable solutions. Stable solutions were obtained for the eccentrically loaded dielectric rod in cylindrically shaped waveguide, but verification is not possible at present. (Author)
