PRESENT STATE-OF-THE-ART AND PROSPECTS FOR APPLICATION OF ELECTRON-BEAM MELTING FOR OBTAINING PURE METALS AND IMPROVING THE PROPERTIES OF EXISTING ALLOYS,

Abstract

The present state of metal refining by electron-beam melting is reviewed and examples of research in this field are presented. Among the presently used electron-beam melting systems, the most popular are axial electron-beam guns and radial electron-beam furnaces. The latter, with a capacity of 100-400 kw have been developed. Niobium and tantalum are easily purified of gases and volatile impurities by electron-beam melting. (Author)
