MOVABLE SHIELD FOR FALLOUT PROTECTION OF ABOVE-GROUND STRUCTURES: DURABILITY STUDY.

Abstract

A movable protective shield, consisting of a number of heavy vertical concrete louvers, was evaluated to determine its operation, weather resistance, and maintenance requirements. A test stand consisting of three panels, or louvers, was erected and exposed to wind, sun, sand, rain, and salt air for 4-1/2 years. Periodic measurements were made of the torque required to turn the panels after periods of immobility of up to 1 year. No increase was noted in the torque required to turn the panels during the test periods. On disassembly, the bearings were found to be in excellent condition. (Author)
