CHEMISTRY OF ORGANOLITHIUM COMPOUNDS AND ACETYLENES.

Abstract

A brief summary of the research is presented. Primary organolithium compounds react with diphenylacetylene to produce an addition-metalation product. Depending upon conditions tertiary organolithium compounds give addition-metalation or products of electron transfer. Using methylphenylacetylenes and organolithium compounds one obtains a trimetalated product, N,N,N,N-Tetramethylethylene diamine has a large accelerating effect on the rate of these reactions. Lithium metal, asinitiator, has been found to give unusual copolymer compositions with acrylophenones and styrenes. The significance of these results are discussed. (Author)
