THE DOUBLE OPTICAL RESONANCE SPECTRA OF ORGANIC AND INORGANIC MOLECULES.

Abstract

Double optical resonance spectra (DOR spectra) of the triplet state were obtained with great ease in the case of the aromatic hydrocarbons naphthalene and anthracene as well as from the halogenated derivatives alpha-chloro and alpha-bromonaphthalene. The lowest triplet state lifetime of these substances ranges from 2.6 seconds in the case of naphthalene to 18 milliseconds in the case of alpha-bromanaphthalene and no difficulty of any kind was experienced in obtaining good vibrational structure when these substances are dissolved in glassy solvents of the type of EPA. The inorganic ions of Cr(3+), Ni(2+), Tl(+) and Mn(2+) in a variety of physical conditions, i.e., both pure materials and as doped ions in host lattices, were also examined, but in no case was sharp vibrational structure, or even very well developed DOR spectra, observed. Results were limited to bleaching, which was observed in a number of these materials, and this has been previously reported, but the intensity of the bleaching and its rather diffuse form prompted a re-examination of the physical conditions being used in the experimental approach.
