IDENTIFICATION OF THE COLLISIONAL DRIFT INSTABILITY BY USE OF CORRELATION TECHNIQUES,
Abstract
A correlator is used to study the fluctuations in plasma density and potential present in an unstable weakly ionized cylindrical magnetoplasma. Auto-correlation measurements yield information concerning the frequencies of these fluctuations while spatial cross-correlation measurements allow us to determine their phase velocity and direction of propagation. Such measurements were made for a wide range of neutral pressures and magnetic field strengths. Results show that the unstable fluctuations have the same characteristic dependence on pressure and magnetic field as the well known 'drift' waves, that is, they propagate in the same direction and with the same velocity as the electron diamagnetic drift.
