COMPARISON OF COLUMNAR IONOSPHERIC ELECTRON CONTENT OBTAINED FROM SIMULTANEOUS MEASUREMENTS OF FARADAY ROTATION AND DOPPLER SHIFT.

Abstract

A comparison of columnar content values calculated from Doppler slope and polarization data is given. Measurements were obtained simultaneously from radio beacon signals transmitted by the S-66 BEC satellite at 40, 41, and 360 MHz. The error of the Doppler method is 5%; the error of the polarization method is 3%. The ratio of the columnar content values varies between 0.75 and 1.22; larger deviations are related to horizontal gradients which affect mainly the precision of the Doppler data evaluation.
