INVESTIGATION OF Al-Be ALLOYS WITH Y, La AND Ce ADDITIVES UP TO 33.3 AT. %,

Abstract

Various properties of Y-Be-Al, La-Be-Al, and Ce-Be-Al systems were compared. In the region of 0.33.3 at.% REM content, all three form single ternary compounds: D-phase in La-Be-Al and Ce-Be-Al and D'-phase in the Y-Be-Al system. They differ in that in the Yttrium and Lanthanum systems the compounds (phase D or D') is in equilibrium with Aluminum, and in the Cerium system it is not. The ternary compound which forms in the Y-Be-Al systems is not isostructural with the compounds of La and Ce and contains more Aluminum than they do. It is concluded that the Y-Be-Al and La-Be-Al systems resemble each other and differ from the Ce-Be-Al system in the character of the phase equilibrium, whereas the La-Be-Al and Ce-Be-Al compounds are more closely related in the type of crystalline structure which forms.
