SPECIMEN PREPARATION AND PRELIMINARY RESULTS IN THE STUDY OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF FIBER REINFORCED MATERIAL.

Abstract

Unidirectional glass/epoxy composite was manufactured and tested to determine effective complex moduli over a time range of about 10 decades and 5 temperatures ranging from 75F to 266F. In the quasi static range only the extensional modulus was determined and in the audio frequency range both extensional and axial shear moduli were obtained. The complex moduli of the epoxy matrix was also determined over the temperature and time range employed in this investigation. The composite extensional modulus was shown to be effectively time and temperature independent. The results were compared to analytical predictions of the moduli. Creep and stress relaxation of the composite material was shown to result in a delayed fracture and this phenomenon was attributed to the viscoelastic properties of the epoxy matrix. (Author)
