THE THEORY OF THE FIGURE OF THE EARTH,

Abstract

Taken from lectures on higher geodesy, gravimetry and the theory of the figure of the earth, these lectures cover the fundamentals of determining the figure of the earth geodetically and gravimetrically, i.e., measurements on the physical surface of the earth, reduction to a reference surface and the determination of the terrestrial ellipsoid. Particular attention is devoted to the Molodenskiy chord method. Geometric gravimetry is covered by consideration of the problem of constructing the potential of the earth's gravitational force, with the earth taken as the ellipsoid of revolution, and the relationship between the gravitational field and the flattening of this ellipsoid is established. Also discussed are the anomalous gravitational field, celestial mechanics and satellite perturbations as part of the determination of the figure of the earth. (Author)
