ON THE QUESTION OF DETERMINING THE NATURAL PERIOD OF HORIZONTAL PENDULUMS WITH ZOELNER SUSPENSION,

Abstract

Horizontal pendulums with Zoelner suspensions are widely used to determine tilting due to tidal effects. The period of these instruments and the errors that are inherent in them have been investigated. It has been shown that the natural period of such instruments depends on the amplitude of oscillation, and this leads to systematic error. The author tested several instruments with different periods, and found that the dependence is a peculiarity of each instrument. Two methods of handling the problem are possible: (1) determine the sensitivity of the instrument so as to bypass knowledge of natural period (direct calibration), or (2) find an expression for period as a function of amplitude and extrapolate period to infinitesimally small amplitudes. The first is not always possible, and the author examines the second method.
