THE SIRIUS SYSTEM OF INTERPRETATION AND RECOGNITION OF IMAGES AND ESTABLISHMENT OF CORRESPONDENCE,

Abstract

The preliminary results of the modeling of the SIRIUS system, which replies to interrogation by images, are given. It is assumed that the images are two-dimensional, that they may in general be drawings, sketches, or photographs, and that the interrogation is put in the Russian language. The essential characteristic of the SIRIS system is that an image rather than a document is subjected to the process of information treatment. A listing of various papers dealing with systems which answer questions and analyze complex images as well as systems capable of solving problems in logic and arithmetic is given. The SIRIUS system of interpretation, recognition, and establishment of comparisons between images and verbal expressions is an operating system whose program is composed on the Ural-4 computer. The three elementary principles on which the system's operation is based are given. A general description of the system as a whole is presented. Samples of the linguistic part of the program, the questions put to the system and its replies concerning the image, are offered.
