SPECIAL-PURPOSE DIGITAL COMPUTER FOR INFORMATION RETRIEVAL,

Abstract

A special-purpose digital computer designed for information search as a part of a computerized information storage and retrieval system is described. The computer does not require an internal memory since intermediate translation and search results are recorded on a number of tracks of magnetic drums. The storage capacity of the drums is large enough to permit storage of at least one of the subsections of the data base; punched and magnetic tape are used for storing the search index and the vocabulary of the remaining subsections. The computer performs the following functions: translates queries from natural to descriptive language, searches for the address codes of relevant documents, and transfers information from punched tape and magnetic tape.
