EXPERIMENT ON THE CONDITIONS OF CONCEPTION OF ZONES OF ROTATING STALL,

Abstract

The author experimented on a series of insulated running wheels and stages with stationary equipment in order (1) to find a more precise definition of the conditions of conception of rotating stall zones (2) to find which values of leakage angles occur in these zones and (3) to determine the effect of geometric characteristics of a blade row stage of an axial-flow compressor at these angles. The author reports that blade clearance has a strong effect on the flow pattern during rotating stall. Forty-four variations of stages (26 stages with entry guiding devices, 14 with outlet rectifying devices, 4 three-section stages) were investigated. The obtained results make it possible to affirm that with sufficient accumulated data on the value of leakage angles corresponding to the conception of rotating stall zones, reliable experimental criteria on the limitation of the working ranges of a stage without rotating stall may be established.
