THE OPTIMUM HEIGHT OF STATICALLY DETERMINABLE GIRDERS,

Abstract

The process of determining the optimal height for statically determinate frames designed for minimum weight is analyzed. The problems of minimum weight and optimal height are correlated. The author demonstrates a design method for a formula which serves as a problem constraint. This constraint can be met for both fixed and variable frame loading conditions. In developing the method, the author also includes the effects of longitudinal bending and other structural restrictions such as the method of joint fastening. It is noted that application of the method does not require detailed design specification.
