SYNTHESIS OF MINIMUM-WIEGHT CYLINDRICAL CASED TANKS,

Abstract

The desired system is a cylindrical shell of desired length and radius reinforced by equally spaced annular ribs and having spherical ends. It is stressed by axial pressure and excess internal pressure. Optimum planning of structures of this type can substantially reduce their weight. The effect of the original bends on the minimum attainable weight for these structures may be considerable (when they are 8 to 10 or more in number). The numerical evaluation of this effect makes it possible to state efficient tolerances for the initial deviations both in the blanks and the assembled structure. The accuracy with which the optimum parameters are determined depends chiefly on the accuracy of the method of calculating the carrying capacity of the reinforced cylindrical shells.
