NUMERICAL CONTROL-EPOXY FIXTURING.

Abstract

The paper deals with an improved technique used to manufacture a fixture made of aluminum-filled epoxy casting resin for precast castings of irregular configurations in the numerical control metal working facilities at Edgewood Arsenal. Specific examples are illustrated, as well as the latest techniques of checkout by digital coordinate measuring device. It is not intended that these developments of epoxy fixturing provide the answers to all machine fixturing problems, but as ascertained, the solution and significant improvements are possible for the precision castings being produced and used at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. The cost of producing these items by conventional means would have been four times greater than producing them by epoxy fixturing. In epoxy fixturing, it has been proven that tangible benefits were realized by elimination of individual fixtures. The feasibility of incorporating a combination of components of variable configuration has been successfully developed and implemented. Time and cost savings are apparent through the increased productivity and consistent quality of the items produced. (Author)
