THE THERMAL REACTION BATTERY. IV. PREPARATION AND PYROLYSIS OF SELECTED PRECURSORS TO GLUTARONITRILE,

Abstract

Glutaronitrile is a candidate for the organic electrolyte solvent in the proposed thermal reaction battery. It is one of the products produced on pyrolysis of the di-(trimethylhydrazonium salts) of glutaraldehyde and glutaraldioxime. Therefore, preparation and characterization of a series of glutaraldehyde di-(trimethylhydrazonium salts) have been carried out and are reported. Preliminary pyrolytic data are also recorded. Complete characterization of these pyrolytic products, and kinetic evaluation of the pyrolytic reactions will be included in future work. The expected products of pyrolysis, glutaronitrile and the corresponding ammonium salt were isolated from the reaction mixture and identified by gas chromatography, infrared spectra and elemental analysis. Therefore, these ammonium salts were independently prepared and conductivity measurements of these salts in glutaronitrile are being studied. (Author)
