ARMY HEART MONITOR-MODEL II,
Abstract
Model II of the Army Heart Monitor (formerly called the Cardiac Arrest Indicator) is an electronic device that monitors the electrocardiogram (ECG) and makes distinctive indications when cardiac standstill or ventricular fibrillation occurs. This model differentiates ventricular fibrillation from the other myocardial waveforms on the basis of the duty cycle (a parameter related to the area under the curve) of the ECG signals. Laboratory and clinical tests have shown duty cycle to be a useful fibrillation-sensing parameter. However, false indications of ventricular fibrillation by Model II have shown the need for further improvements in the fibrillation-sensing scheme. Nevertheless, in demonstrating an improved means of sensing ventricular fibrillation, in demonstrating an operable automatic gain control, and in allowing the commencement of clinical evaluation, the design aims for Model II were realized.
