USE OF AERIAL METHODS FOR STUDYING ZONAL AND REGIONAL LANDSCAPE PATTERNS,

Abstract

The science of landscapes in the USSR is a special branch of geography integrating data on soils, hydrography, topography, climate, vegetation and other fields of natural phenomena in their overall interrelationships. Aerial photography has not yet been used in this work and landscape science has accordingly suffered. Aerial methods must be used if science is to advance. Over all assessments of regions and natural zones are essential in the USSR, where vast areas are still unexploited or where more effective exploitation is necessary for development of the national economy. The author gives a number of specific examples showing the effectiveness of the use of aerial photography in landscape studies. This is followed by a review of the author's proposals for coverage of the country by a system of geographic reference profiles running east to west and north to south across the entire Soviet Union, which could serve as a basis for making more detailed landscape studies.
