A AND M PHYSICAL AND OPTICAL OBSERVATIONAL SPECTROSCOPY AND BREAKDOWN.
Abstract
The goal of the research program is to study collisions of low-energy electrons with atoms and molecules, using time-of-flight techniques for achieving high energy resolution. During the contract period a versatile system was built which consists of an electron-optical bench in an environment suitable for experiments with low-energy electrons. A detailed description of this system is given. Various design studies for time-of-flight components were made. The results of those studies are outlined in the report. Experimental work on the dissociation of molecular hydrogen by electron impact, with the formation of metastable hydrogen atoms, is reported. Data acquisition using a computer and the design of new vacuum apparatus are described. A new tube is being constructed for the measurement of super-elastic collisions between electrons and molecules.
