CHEMICAL TREATMENT OF THE SURFACE OF A GLASS FIBER (SELECTED ARTICLES),

Abstract

The influence of the method and extent of the desizing process on the properties of glass cloth treated with coupling agents and on the properties of glass reinforced plastics made thereof were investigated. Dicyandiamide-HCHO resin, gelatin or poly(vinyl alcohol), were used as the binding agents. The residual size content depends on the temperature of the thermal treatment and not on the size composition. Experiments were also conducted to determine the possibility of continuous and bath thermochemical treatments of glass fiber. A flow sheet is given for an experimental application for finishing glass fiber. The characteristics of an untreated fiber made of aluminoborosilicate non-alkali glass with an oiling agent (paraffin emulsion) are given. The finishing agent used for the chemical treatment of glass fiber are given. (Author)
