THE INFLUENCE OF RADIATION ON METALLIC MATERIALS,

Abstract

The mechanism of influence of high-energy radiation on mechanical properties of metallic materials is analyzed in view of using the radiative treatment for prescribed variation of properties of metals and alloys. Three possible mechanisms of interaction are discussed: (1) direct interaction of radiational defects with dislocations; (2) radiational stimulation of chemical processes in crystals (dissociation of supersaturated solid solutions, alloy ordering, etc.); (3) nuclear alloying. It is noted that the second mechanism is the most promising from the viewpoint of generating stable changes in metals. (Author)
