THE CHANGING ROLE OF THE PLA UNDER THE IMPACT OF THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION.

Abstract

The People's Liberation Army (PLA) was used to restore order in China when the cultural revolution became too chaotic. Revolutionary committees were formed to take over political, social, and economic affairs. Military men have dominated these committees. The armed forces have thus been given power of a quantity and kind not known before, principally in local affairs and probably in negotiations with the central authorities. Total military influence has changed and grown, and the armed forces could easily coalesce into a formidable political entity. Events along the Sino-Soviet border have sharpened Chinese awareness of the uses of military power and the role of modern equipment. It is possible that a new leadership, weighted with professional military men, will emerge in Peking. (Author)
