THE VARIATION OF THE UPPER ATMOSPHERIC SCALE HEIGHT AND ITS EFFECT ON ATMOSPHERIC TIDAL WAVELENGTHS.

Abstract

Using atmospheric models from the U. S. Standard Atmosphere 1966, Supplements, the extremes of the atmospheric scale height profile are obtained and compared with an 'average' profile. The first and second height derivatives of all three profiles are calculated and compared. An expression is obtained for the wavelength of the atmospheric tide (a function of the scale height and its derivatives) which is more exact than the one in common use, and the extent of validity of the approximate formula is shown. The change in the tidal wavelength due to variation of the scale height profile is also explicated. (Author)
