POWER SERIES AND THE NUMERICAL TREATMENT OF INITIAL VALUE PROBLEMS,

Abstract

The report examines power series methods for computing the solution to an initial-value problem at a few isolated points with moderate to excellent accuracy. Recursion formulas for determining the coefficients in several power series are developed for easy implementation on a digital computer. Consideration is also given to methods for accelerating series convergence, for obtaining asymptotic values, and for treating quadratically nonlinear systems of equations. Several numerical experiments are performed to test the efficacy of the proposed methods. Results include a complete set of PL/1 programs suitable for obtaining power series solutions for scalar initial-value problems as well as for the quadratic multidimensional case. (Author)
