FREQUENCY DIVISION MULTIPLEX. RADC TROPOSCATTER TEST PROGRAM.

Abstract

Over-the-air tests were conducted to determine the performance which can be expected from transmitting 2.4 kb/s and 38.4 kb/s digital data thru voice and group channels of an FM/FDM tropo-scatter communications system. The tests were performed on path lengths of 100, 200 and 400 miles in New York State and in the Carribean area. The basic transmission system was the AN/MRC-98 Radio Set configured for 24 and 120 voice channel capacities. The 2.4 kb/s and 38.4 kb/s modems were of the duo-binary and DCPSK type. The modem performance, in terms of bit error rate, is presented as a function of received carrier power, channel signal-to-noise ratio, order of diversity, system channel capacity, and predicted path intermodulation noise.
