A METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE TRANSITION FROM A LAMINAR TO A TURBULENT BOUNDARY LAYER,

Abstract

A method is introduced for determining the transition from a laminar to a turbulent boundary layer. The procedure is based on utilizing the properties of wire to change electrical resistance as a function of temperature. Accuracy is improved by fastening a metal wire at the given cross section of the model flush with the surface subjected to the flow, passing a current through the wire, determining the voltage distribution lengthwise of the wire, and then using the resultant distribution per unit length of the wire to determine the region of transition from the laminar to the turbulent boundary layer.
