EXCERPTS FROM THE OFFICERS HANDBOOK OF MILITARY TOPOGRAPHY OF THE USSR,

Abstract

These two sections of the manual describe ways for determining the passability of various kinds of terrain to troops and motorized transport including wheeled and tracked vehicle, the use of local features for defense against nuclear weapons, procedures for determining march routes in various circumstance, techniques for winter reconnaissance, procedures for reconnoitering roads, rivers, bridges and swamps and for judging soils and earths as to their load bearing capability of various kinds of areas and obstacles by infantry, wheeled and tracked vehicles and the load carrying capacities of bridges and various earth surfaces. Instructions are given for terrain reconnaissance in various kinds of terrain. (Author)
