THE WATER REQUIREMENT OF PREGNANT WOMEN.

Abstract

Data relating to the water balance of Chinese women at 2, 6 or 8 months of pregnancy were collected over 157 two week balance periods in a metabolic ward. In 60 of the balance periods the water intake was unrestricted; from these data the expected intake for given temperature is calculated. In 43 of the balance periods the water intake was restricted; the degree of restriction is expressed as a percentage of the expected unrestricted intake for the prevailing temperature. In 10 of the balance periods the normal intake was deliberately augmented. The weights at birth and up to 2 years of age of the infants resulting from these pregnancies were monitored together with the standard milestones of development. Water intakes in the range 70-90% of normal did not result in demonstrable dehydration of the mothers or in statistically significant effects on the infants. (Author)
