CHARGE TRANSFER CROSS SECTIONS OF THE ALKALI METALS.

Abstract

Charge transfer cross sections have been measured at this laboratory for 17 ion-atom combinations encompassing all of the alkali metals over an energy range from 0.5 to 25 keV. Measurements were made with crossed beam and direct curve plotting techniques, utilizing surface ionization to generate ions and detect atoms. A total of 12 cross sections were measured, most of which showed oscillatory structure. A listing is given of each of the measured reactions. Examples of the results are shown, including a case in which electron transfer to an excited state was dominant. Theoretical studies were made concerning the oscillatory structure. Emperical studies were made to develop a model for nonresonant transfer. Results of the investigation are summarized and the publications resulting from the investigation are listed. (Author)
