COUNTERMEASURES TO DANGEROUS SHARKS,

Abstract

Sharks present a hazard to both men and equipment in the sea. Some of these hazards are described here, but the emphasis is on countermeasures. Operations in the sea are divided into three groups: survival, short-term, and long-term operations. Appropriate countermeasures are described and discussed in their relation to each of these categories. Among the countermeasures discussed are chemical, electrical, and physical devices. The conclusions drawn from this review are that, while a vast amount of information about sharks and their behavior has been accumulated through the years, much new knowledge is required before adequate countermeasures for every contingency can be devised.
