SAPWOOD THICKNESS OF DOUGLAS-FIR AND FIVE OTHER WESTERN SOFTWOODS.

Abstract

Sapwood measurements were made on increment cores extracted at breast height from Douglas-fir, western larch, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, western redcedar, and Engelmann spruce trees. The trees sampled were representative of the growth range of each species. Sapwood thickness measurements, of primary interest to preservative treating of forest products, showed an increase with increasing tree diameter. In addition, Douglas-fir sapwood thickness was greater in the Coast type than in the Interior type for trees of the same diameter. Also for Coast Douglas-fir, sapwood thickness decreased with increasing elevation, and trees having the most rapid diameter growth had the thickest sapwood. (Author)
