BASIC RESEARCH IN OPTICS.

Abstract

The major achievements of the research during this period were the growth of large single crystals of argon, krypton, and xenon and the observation of x-ray induced luminescence in the crystals; the development of apparatus for, and the measurement of, double quantum absorption in solids and liquids; the measurement of photoemissive yields from films of solid xenon and krypton; the measurement of the absorption spectra of alkali halides at low temperature; and the discovery of electro luminescence in single crystals of the alkali halides.
