SHEAR CRACK PROPAGATION IN HY-80, HY-130, AND 18 Ni (180) MARAGING STEELS UNDER CYCLIC BI-AXIAL LOADING,

Abstract

The lateral shear crack propagation under cyclic bi-axial loading in HY-80. Hy-130 and 18 Ni (180) maraging steels was investigated. At a given ratio of applied shear stress and the shear yield strength of the material, HY-80 steel has the highest resistance to shear crack propagation. At a given stress range, HY-130 steel has a slightly higher resistance to shear crack propagation. Shear deformation ahead of crack tip and along the crack line and crack sliding displacement, CSD, were measured using moire method. The shear deformation is a power function of the distance from the crack tip. The shear crack propagation rate is proportional linearly to the shear deformation at a small distance from the crack tip and proportional to the second power of crack sliding displacement. (Author)
