DETERMINING RESIDUAL STRESS IN WELDED METAL SAMPLES,

Abstract

Four different types of dismountable tensometers are compared: the Berry tensometer, the Moscow Higher Technical School im. Bauman tensometer, Tensotast, and the Burnshteyn laminar tensometer. It is established that the drilling of apertures and press fitting of fastening studs in these tensometers distort the stress diagram of the investigated specimens; the presence of hinged joints and transmitting elements also is a source of errors. Hence it would be more effective to employ the fundamentally different technique of optical estimation of residual stresses according to the variation in the distance between extremely tiny markings gouged on the surface of the specimen by means of a prick punch proposed by R. M. Aronov.
