Abstract
The book is a thorough investigation of a small but extremely important area of English syntax. The intent of the study is to confirm Henry Hiz's conjecture that, in the framework of Harris's theory of transformations, anaphoric and determinative they are entirely absent from kernel sentences and can always be introduced as transformational constants.
