DUAL INPUT TRANSPONDER.

Abstract

Three Feasibility Models of the Dual Input Transponder (D.I.T.) were built to Specification ER 240-010. The equipment will be used to test one method of eliminating the loss of ATC transponder replies which occurred during aircraft maneuvers when parts of the airframe or engine naceles were interrupting the line of sight between the transponder and the ground interrogator. The D.I.T. is provided with two transmitting receiving antennas located on the airframe in positions such that for almost every aircraft attitude one or the other of the antennas will have an uninterrupted line of sight to the various ATC interrogators in the range of the D.I. T. equipped aircraft. The interrogating signals arriving at the two antennas are received by two parallel receiver channels and the amplitude of the detected signals compared. Based on this comparison, a decision is made to switch the output of the transponder transmitter to the antenna which has received the larger interrogating signal. (Author)
