MARINE FAUNA OF THE AEGEAN SEA. SURFACE ZOOPLANKTON FROM THE NORTH AEGEAN SEA.
Abstract
A systematic survey of the surface zooplankton from the whole Aegean Sea and some data on the zooplankton from different depths in the South Aegean is presented. Regular sampling of plankton and gathering of oceanographic data from several seasonal stations was effected during the years 1963 to 1967. A check-list of planktonic organisms from the Aegean is given for the first time. It includes Protozoa, Siphonophora, Cladocera, Copepoda, Amphipoda, Isopoda, Mysida, Euphausiacea, Chaetognatha, Mollusca, Annelida, Thaliacea, etc. The distribution and abundance patterns of many species are established and their seasonal fluctuation and some relations to environmental factors are stressed and discussed. Special emphasis is given to the ecologically important groups like the Copepoda and Chaetognatha. Two biogeographically distinct areas, the North and the South Aegean, are recognized. Possible influences from adjacent seas are briefly considered. An overall picture of the planktonic fauna of the Aegean and its main features are tentatively presented. (Author)
