DEVELOPMENT AND TEST OF LONG-LIFE, HYBRID BOOST THRUST BEARINGS FOR SMALL, HIGH-SPEED JET ENGINE APPLICATIONS.

Abstract

The initial stage of development of two Hybrid Boost Bearing designs, applicable to jet engines, is described in this report. This work consisted of selection of Hybrid Boost bearing components, analysis of the fluid film bearing component, analysis of the ball bearing component, calculations of the combined Hybrid-Boost-Bearing performance, design of two Hybrid-Boost-bearing configurations - one rigid and one retractable, design, manufacture and assembly of a test facility, tests of the two configurations, and comparison between predicted and actual performance of the Hybrid Boost Bearing.
