EFFECT OF SULFONAMIDE DRUGS ON ANOXIA TOLERANCE: EFFECTS OF PROPHYLACTIC DOSES OF SULFANILAMIDE, SULFATHIAZOLE, SULFADIAZINE AND SULFAPYRAZINE.

Abstract

Studies were conducted to determine whether single 4-gram doses of sulfanilamide, sulfadiazine, sulfathiazole and sulfapyrazine affect performance at simulated altitudes of 18,000 feet either with or without added oxygen. Conclusions and recommendations were: (a) Intellectual and psychomotor performance at 18,000 feet simulated altitude, both with and without supplemental oxygen, is adversely affected by single 4-gram doses of sulfanilamide taken approximately 4 to 6 hours before testing. (b) Under similar conditions 4-gram doses of sulfadiazine, sulfathiazole or sulfapyrazine are without measurable detrimental effect. (c) It is recommended that this demonstrated effect of comparatively small doses of sulfanilamide be considered in the use of this drug, both locally and systemically, in flying personnel. (Author)
